Our clients envisioned a modern home, open to the outdoors, with spaces designed for family and for entertaining guests. The challenge was to design the indoor-outdoor living spaces they envisioned on a steeply sloped, narrow site within an existing neighborhood.
Our solution was to organize the private and public spaces within two intersecting volumes comprising 5,200 SF and oriented in relationship to Glendale Drive. The sleeping quarters and other areas requiring quiet, private spaces are perpendicular to the road, obscuring the view to passersby while providing the homeowners with scenic views of the surrounding forest. The living areas are parallel to the road, allowing easy access to the entry court, outdoor decks and pool area. The entry flows into the living area, which is open to the kitchen and the dining area, and opens on to an outdoor deck overlooking the pool on the ground floor below. Within the private area of the main floor is an office and the master suite, which cantilevers over the ground floor and into the forest beyond.
To accommodate a driveway, the main level of the home was sited nearly two stories below the elevation of the road. From Glendale Drive, the home appears to have two levels, in keeping with the scale of the existing neighborhood. Only from the trail below can you see the two levels below the main floor.
The third floor has two additional family bedrooms with access to a roof deck. On the ground floor are two guest suites with direct access to the pool and outdoor living areas.
