AIA North Carolina recognized Phil Szostak, FAIA, with the 2018 F. Carter Williams Gold Medal at the annual Design Awards in October. The Gold Medal is the highest honor presented by the Chapter to a member of AIA North Carolina and celebrates Phil’s many achievements in his 40-plus-year career as an architect.
Jeffrey Lee, FAIA, Phil’s good friend and colleague since their undergraduate years at the NC State College of Design, nominated Phil for the award, saying, in part:
Phil has never wanted to be anything other than an architect. He has spent his entire career in the pursuit of design excellence…For Phil, [this pursuit] is unaffected by the scale or budget of the project. From the redevelopment impact of the urban design scaled Durham Performing Arts Center, to the quiet agrarian elegance of the milking barn, Phil has displayed a remarkable level of consistency, creativity and virtuosity in detail and execution. By any measure, this range and body of work represents an extraordinary accomplishment.
