1995 | Moore Regional Wellness Center | Pinehurst, NC
Moore Regional Wellness Center is a 48,500 square foot, hospital-affiliated sports and medical center in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The center combines recreational as well as clinical spaces designed to serve the region’s growing retirement community. The center’s recreational amenities include an aerobics studio, a 25-yard competition and recreation pool, a volleyball/ basketball court, three racquetball courts, an indoor running track, weight training facilities, a whirlpool, and sauna room. Clinical spaces provide rooms for evaluation and treatment of patients, supporting a variety of doctor-supervised programs in physical and occupational therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation. A lounge with a juice bar, locker facilities, a pro shop, and a child care room are shared in the public spaces.
The center’s plan is developed from the juxtaposition of two overlapping geometries with important shared functions, including the locker rooms, located at their central intersection. Public circulation is placed along the building’s perimeter, offering patrons the benefit of natural daylight and unobstructed views to the outside. The building’s exterior is presented as a highly disciplined, though welcoming composition of exposed steel, curtain wall, and masonry.
