2012 | Downtown Residence | Chapel Hill, NC

The Downtown Residence is a 2,800-square-foot urban home fitted onto a narrow, 1/8-acre site. The program for the two-bedroom home was extruded vertically into a three-story volume that preserves the homeowners’ privacy while offering treetop views of the surrounding neighborhood. All of the home’s principal spaces open onto a dramatic, sunlit staircase that animates the home’s interior volumes. Special amenities include a third-story balcony adjoining the master bedroom suite, accessed through a movable glass partition and featuring an outdoor fireplace and grill. Views from this balcony extend for blocks east and west on Franklin Street, the signature thoroughfare of Chapel Hill.
