2012  |  Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center  |  Raleigh, NC

The 18,500-square-foot Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center (BRAC) is an indoor recreational pool designed for the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department. The facility features a variety of aquatic play and exercise amenities geared to family use including a three-story water slide, current channel, water vortex, aquatic volleyball and basketball courts and a water massage bench. In addition, there is a toddler sprayground with a zero-depth entry that permits full ADA accessibility to all areas of the pool.

The building is LEED Silver Certified. Sustainable features include a state-of-the-art regenerative media water filtration system augmented by UV light disinfection. Air temperature and humidity control are provided by a Dectron dehumidification mechanical unit equipped with a heat recovery wheel that recaptures excess energy, providing supplemental heating for the pool water. The mechanical systems are augmented by a bank of roof mounted solar hot water panels. Other sustainable features of the project include a vegetated “green” roof and enhanced roof and wall insulation.
